The Jamonera website is just about finished! All that's left (besides the upcoming Valentine's Day menu) is to get some press posted in the press section. I'm sure that will come soon enough.

I designed the logo (it started out as a jamon on a jamonera—obviously things changed!), as well as a bag, a hot sauce label, and a collage used for paper coasters and the website background (Marcie and Val brought back a sweet bullfighting magazine from their trip to Spain, chock full of dudes and bulls)

It's officially February, and almost Valentine's Day!
Orders for Valentines (within the US) should be placed by Tuesday, February 7th to make sure they arrive by Valentine's Day! (international orders should be placed ASAP as delivery could take up to 2 weeks—eek!)

I haven't posted much here lately—January has been busy!

I did these little doodles on register tape when I was working at the market on 13th Street (I think they're from 2007 or 8.) I found them yesterday in an old notebook—they are a testament to my dedication as a cashier ;)

When I lived in a studio on Manning Street I would walk through Rittenhouse Square on my way to and from work—that's where I spotted the pigeon going to town on a cupcake.

And I always avoid walking under ladders. Always! (the girl with the sweatshirt and bun is me :) )

I finished my Valentine's Day designs this week! It's good, because I got it done well before February. It's bad, because now I want to share them, but it's only January 6th.

Kelsey is a wedding photographer who decided to do some re-branding, and asked if I would design a new logo for her new name. I said yes! Below (to the left) is the final logo, and to the right the first logo-ideas I sent her to look over (there are always so many options!) Above is the feather and twine icon she puts on her photos online—I think it's my favorite part. And I believe she'll be making it into a custom stamp—I love stamps!

I was re-photographing (ok, re-re-photographing) my Get Together cards today, and remembered why I made them in the first place...

Last Christmas I bought a gift certificate to a restaurant here in Philadelphia to give to a friend—we like brunch. I thought the gift card packaging was a little generic, so I threw it away and made a little card (hey let's get brunch sometime) to slip the certificate into, and then popped both into a little envelope together.

I've been pretty focused on holiday cards lately, but realized today that these little Get Together guys would probably make pretty good gifts! Kind of like those coupon books you'd make for your parents promising to do chores or something (yeah right)—but this is more like coupons to go out together! Or just substitutes for boring gift card envelopes.

And how cute would they look in a stocking!

the Small Garden website

I was so excited when I got Carolynn's email last night that said The Small Garden website was live!

There has been a pretty great response to the logo since I posted it, and I've been looking forward to seeing the finished website!

I can't take credit for making the site functional (that's thanks to their developer, Chris), but I did design the 'look' of it, and am so impressed that Chris was able to put it together just right! (it makes me wish my web skills were better (waaaayyyy better)).

Also, Carolynn and Tom do such beautiful work! Their online shop will open soon, so be sure to check out the site again in the next couple of weeks!

Jamonera is the latest addition to Marcie and Valerie's stretch of 13th Street in Philadelphia. It's a Spanish wine bar taking the place of their modern Indian restaurant, Bindi. These are the business cards—the restaurant will open soon, and hopefully I'll have the website finished before then!

the Wedding Quote Book

One of my very best friends, Cecilia, is getting married in the Spring!

We lived across the hall from each other in the dorms our freshman year of college, and that's when I was introduced to the quote book. There are several volumes (the one I'm most familiar with has an orange Garfield cover) in which most of the ridiculous things we and our friends said would be written. We could refer to the quote book whenever we felt like laughing hysterically (while simultaneously feeling like idiots).

Almost immediately after Cecilia told me she was engaged, I thought, I need to make a Wedding Quote Book!

And so I did! Just a simple Moleskine notebook with a belly band. And the first quote is Cecilia's:

the Small Garden

Another project I worked on this summer was a logo for the Small Garden, a new company based in Australia (with a name that I think is so great!)
They're still in the process of finalizing all the details before they launch, but for now the logo is done!
I'm looking forward to seeing both the logo and the Small Garden in action!

They didn't want anything too whimsical, too modern, or too old fashioned,

and plan to play with some bright colors that you don't typically find in garden-branding...

Good News, Bad News

the Good News:
I have new business cards!
I finally made up my mind on a design (I tell myself I won't change it again. But I bet I will.) My mom, sister, and brother all chose the same design—and then I chose the opposite. (just a note, I always include a business card with my shop orders. y'know. hint. ;) )

the Bad News:
My hometown is flooded.

Usually, someone asks me where I'm from; I tell them; they've never heard of it; then I tell them that my grandfather is the mayor. It's a fun little fact! He's a goofy, sweet guy. And he and everyone back home have a lot of work ahead of them (once the water finally recedes).

My grandpa, and my dad, and most of my uncles are volunteer firefighters, and I'm sure they've all been working much longer shifts than they should (I think my dad was awake for something like 36 hours straight). I hope they're remembering to rest.

My parents' house is on a hill, so it's dry, but it seems like most everything else is under water. Everyone at home probably feels totally helpless—and I definitely feel it, seeing all the photos from my messy—but dry—little house in Philadelphia.

I need to decide if I want to re-print them as-is, or if I should re-design them.
I realize consistency is important, and that I shouldn't keep re-doing things willy-nilly, but the current cards match the old website.
Should I have new cards to match the new website?
(I realize the cards don't have to match anything)
Is this a silly thing to worry about?

I think the cards I have now are...cute? But I don't always want to be so cutesy. It just kind of happens.

Some New Work

I've been working with both Jill and Selma this summer on designs for their businesses.

Jill has returned to Philadelphia and is moving her practice here! Naturopathic Medicine isn't necessarily well-known in these parts, so for her design she wanted something simple and professional. It was a little tricky, since we both like colors and patterns (and she contacted me based on my design of the Bindi bag, which isn't exactly understated!) I think it turned out well in the end.

Selma has been a doula in the Philadelphia area for several years and wanted some new design. She wanted something "simple, kind, and warm" and not too cutesy. I couldn't help but imagine a stork. My first thought was storks are cliché. My second thought was that everything baby-related is cliché! My third thought? I don't think people mind clichés so much when it comes to babies! Babies just make ya happy. And while storks don't actually bring people their babies, they're sort of a symbol of bringing a family together, which Selma helps to do as a doula in the delivery room.

Procrastinating for the Family

So, there's actually quite a bit of work to be done this long-weekend!
But first,
I've decided to share some of my brother's work.
My little brother, Shawn (he's 25, so he's not really that little, but anyway), has a degree in photography and takes great photos, but also likes to spend time (a lot of time) on drawings full of tiny lines and details. He sits at the kitchen counter and works away at his mini-mega-masterpieces--taking breaks only to harass the cat and/or ask me which part of the drawing is my favorite (I never know! There's so much stuff!)
I've been telling him lately that he needs to put himself and his work "out there"--wherever "there" is. I guess for now "there" is here.
He has an unused online shop, the ability to make awesome sneakers, and a ton of potential.
This is what he's working on now...

I'm right, right? He needs to do something with this!

Etsy or Big Cartel?

So lately (today) I've been thinking about whether I should keep going with Etsy, or move my little shop over to Big Cartel.

I do like the "community" feeling at Etsy. On the other hand it seems easy to get lost in the shuffle there. I also realized that Etsy fees have the potential to really add up: $0.20 for every listing/re-listing, plus Etsy takes a small percentage of each sale. $10/month at Big Cartel starts to look pretty good compared to $25-$30 worth of fees from Etsy at the end of the month. I guess the question is, will I have the same amount of sales if I leave?

There's also a little buzz in the back of my mind that thinks having a non-etsy online shop might seem more professional. Kind of? Not really? Decisions, decisions...

More magnets! They look pretty cute on a fridge, if I do say so myself.
I've been wondering lately if anyone else sees potential in a refrigerator door. After all it is the largest appliance in "the most social room in the house." I guess it's a spot usually reserved for A+ papers, or shopping lists, or drawings by your favorite 5 year old (dogs that look like lopsided horses are the best). Some people prefer to keep the fridge door bare. I get it, the uncluttered look. I prefer some endearing-clutter. :) I'll post a picture of my refrigerator door one of these days!

exciting wednesday!

I woke up excited to tease my cat all day about it being her "birthday" (today actually just marks 6 months since I found her and scooped her up!) but THEN! I discovered an email inbox full of facebook and twitter notifications. Why? Because Jane at Simple+Pretty featured my work on her simply-beautiful-blog! It's very exciting and I can't thank her enough.

I also realized some of my cards had popped up on other blogs (I had no idea!) Thank you to all of them! twig & thistle, the cheddar guppies, and 7 line photography

Back to work! :)

I was asked to make a custom illustration for someone's sister's wedding. I hope the bride and groom are happy with the card! (they have cats and ducks and chicks!)

My first sets of magnets are ready to purchase in my etsy shop! They're all cut by hand, so they'll always vary slightly, but that's part of the beauty of being handmade, right!

Since I'm "my own boss" now I have lists upon lists of things I want to make and do to occupy my time (and, probably more importantly, pay my bills). I ordered up a little screen printing kit and tested it out today. I'm so excited! I'm a big mess, and I don't really remember what I'm doing (I haven't done this in like, 5 years), but I've got big plans, anyway!

I recently left my full-time job, and have wandered into the world of freelancing. It's a big, scary change, but I'm hoping for good things to happen as a result--big things!
